Serving all of Durham Region

The final steps in the process to create the United Way of Durham Region have now been completed. For more than 40 years there were two United Ways serving in Durham. It later added the communities of Clarington and the townships of Brock & Scugog) About 40 years ago the Ajax/Pickering United Way was formed, and Uxbridge was added a... more »

70 Years of Service - A legacy we're proud to carry on.

The 2010 Campaign for the United Way in Durham Region will mark the 70th anniversary of service for the United Way in this community. While much has changed in 70 years there are more than a few constants. Coming together as a community, in good times and in difficult times, to help those less advantaged is something we hope will never go out of fashion. A note to site visitors about the "thought of the day" on the top of this page.

Many people have commented on how much they like our "thought for the day". They notice that it has changed when they come back to the site, and asked if we could list them all in one place. The site is designed to rotate the TOTD with each visit, or if the site is refreshed by hitting the "home" navigator when you are on the site. We thank you for you support and help, and invite you to call us... more »

Building a Stronger Community...Together!

There can be no doubt that the past two or three years have been turbulent and uncertain ones for all of us.

A financial crisis created elsewhere has had deep and profound impacts on communities all around the globe, and we in Durham have certainly felt the impact. It is precisely in times such as these that the role of the United Way, and the support of a generous community, are critically important.

This United Way was created in the throws of the second world war by a civic leadership which recognized the importance of helping people in need in turbulent and stressful times. In so doing they knew then, as we do now, that when you help those least advantaged and in greatest need you build a stronger and better community which benefits everyone. This lesson of history is a crucial reminder for us now.

The role of the United Way is to help give structure to a cohesive and coordinated community wide effort which will not only help immediately and efficiently, but do so in the most coherent and effective fashion possible. "Every cent well spent" is a phrase which is deeply imbedded in our culture. Agency and program reviews help to ensure our donors that their charitable generosity gets to the people who need it most.

We are proud to be the custodians of this proud legacy of sharing and caring, and we are grateful to the many hundreds of campaign volunteers who make it possible, and the many thousands of donors all across this region who demonstrate by their actions the finest elements of community.
